Fantastic to watch, it really was the FINAL and we came and delivered attack , attack, attack and it was fun!! We’ll take the 3 goals that went it, but we probably put 40 shots on their keeper tonight, and to be fair he was brilliant. Casey had to pound 3 tomo’s and one ballistic missile before getting one past. All your shots were on target and stuck clean. Ryan opened the scoring in the 9th minute, finishing a well earnt PC. Ryan blitzed them all game, you also back-tackled well tongiht, no stick hitting when you poached the ball. Some insane centre passes. Brad captained the win, and hit players with more passes, more precision and had a huge match. Its not often Brad doesn’t score, but a reflection of how much work he done setting the skeleton alight . Carter finished the scoring in the 30th minute, and unleashed some big plays. He was there during the PC defense at the end to releive the pressure, well done, big game, Carter has earnt the vice-captaincy for AIMS. Big H you were the concrete in the defense. Hard. I have a note in the stats that says Harry wins 4 on 1. Wow. Accepting any attack, just standing strong. You triggered the build up of Callums monster performance, and that all links back to Ryan, Callum and Carter crushing of anything that came down the right side. The left, well Bailey made that his territory, power passes and the ability to pump out 50 minutes of high performance hockey. Finn you were all over the place, big game, big output and reading the game exptionally well from the deeper CH position, then slotting into the left inner role and keeping the waves of attack rolling in. Ashleigh your a little fella that brings a huge impact, at trainings, on the field, its all on all the time. Ashton you would be unlucky not to have had more game time, your hockey is as good as its been, and your short time on the field tonight was impressive, twice or three times you hit the ball running backwards to clear from defence. Each time you could see the releif on our players that a tricky situation just dissapeared due to your skills and power. Cody its was what we have come to expect, consistent, fast and solid. We learnt last week, theres no limit to the dedication. Luke picked up some tricky backstick passes from Bailey, and ran at everything creating something from nothing. Cory you put so much pressure on their defence, and in the second half you made a big effort to win that 50/50 situation causing them to mishit it and spill it a few times. HarrY I remember a strong defensive play towards the end and some strong tackles & you kept their seagull under control. Kavea when you have the ball its on your stick, the other team don’t have the ball when its on Kavea’s stick, he controls it, possesses it, doens’t like letting it go. It allows our midfield and attack to set-up, and you pressured the guy at the back everytime he went to clear. Skie you were fixing your bones while hounding at the bones for a strong performance. Its a bit different when you can’t play, you can probably imagine how much I wish I could be out there myself. However, it can be extrememly fun to watch, and I got to share the dugout with you and John.K and experence that game together. I’m kinda sure everyone has got a mention, if not I’ll write about how good you are come MONDAY WEEK VS KAMO.
Some key points were:
We played the full 50, there wasn’t the drop-off, we bought clean and fast hockey.
Brad sucked up the referees calls, sometimes during such short games its the best thing, Ryan also took a hard call, funny thing being he rushed back into defense and they gave it straight to him. We need this approach, we hurt together when we don’t agree with the decisions, but our respect to the ref’s tongiht was tops, and in turn they gave us a pretty decent match.
Casey that connection was as fast as I have ever seen, an I’m talking players at the olympics wouldn’t get too many shots away faster than that. Luke done something pretty similar last week. Its impressive hand-eye co-ordination and we just have to be patient for one of them to go in, they will, and they feel great. It sends a message to their defense that our attackers are here to strike, and that we will.
Cory and Zak went all out at 6-a-side then fronted up a big Final performance. Zak, you scored 2 goals, let 2 goals through, in 15 games thats unbeleivable.
All boys on the sideline, there was no pressure or asking Kent if they can go on, its not fun having players on the side, we all know that, and tonight you all went for it when you were on. Job done.
Kent and Elaine shared the mini-van on the way home, must of been a few parents at the game :-) Thanks everyone, particularly Gav, we missed you, and are fortunate you've seen the magic these boys bring so you know how that 50 mins of hockey felt. Well done the BONES, 1st place Tauranga 2017.
At Tauranga Turf
Great game by the bones with some exploding plays. It started in the 19th minute when Brad came off the bench and sunk the first goal. This set the backs up for some monster defending with Cody - bonecrusher - diving full on into the goal zone to keep them scoreless. We then experienced a 4 player PC, and we rushed them, blocked their strikes and then Ashton fended off an attacker who was skirting around the goal mouth. Both those defenders also crushed their defensive hits and sideline hits tonight, strong hockey.
Half time came and it was time to introduce the inners, both of who scored during the second half with Carter only taking 1 minute to get his first, and also striking home in the 22nd minute. Finn converted in the 16th minute, and in amongst that the ruthless Rothwell nailed his second goal in the 7th min.
There were also a number of fly shots, Finn connected, Luke connected like a cannon firing, and Callum edged one. We were impressed, nothing like seeing a solid unleashing in the circle.
Harry took the field and blitzed everything in his path, playing the perfect sideline run in-front of the dugout. The seagull flew for the first time. Bailey astronauted himself into space up the left wing (he also converted from this position midweek for the Ohope men on the end of a Carter-Brad combo!). And Skie wrapped up the second half with a shut-out, holding off some desperate and fidgety attacks.
Thanks to Ashleigh for keeping stats, makes the game summary great to write about. We got in the circle 9 times in the first half for 1 goal, and 8 times in the second half for 4 goals. Remember boys, safety doens’t take a holiday, so don’t slash your fingers open to check if there are bones inside, there are and 16 of them put up a good battle tonight. Well done Carter for captaining the side and if you ever read the website you might learn you will vice-captain the BONES at aims.
Nice night of hockey, thanks to Ernst for taking Kent and Sirius, Elaine and Gav in the minivan, and the parents who were strong in support as you always are for the fellas!
Up the BONES. Finals HOCKEY next game!
At the Mount - Beachside
A game of two halves. The match stats says it all. Thanks Ryan for taking the pen, data builds strategy and what we learnt from the first half was:
-TIS chicks 0
-Tis chicks 1
We had them. The attitude though was soft. Any day i’d take the bones, and i’m sure if we repeated that, we would reverse the outcome.
Second half, quite decent. But the impact from the bench was more that 4 goals i felt, nearly we only got three if bugman didn’t thunderbolt the cannonball home in the dying minutes. Carter looked sharp, and Brad was massive. Harry led the team and our senior players got right in behind him, as we do for any bone in the skeleton.
Anyway, you guys guts it out, finished unbeated, you look awesome in gold and we’re loving the journey.
Well done to Harry who captained the bones tonight, a very nice moment for Big H to grind out what resulted in a good win. We beat our girls 5-0, they beat our girls 2-1, so overal 4-1, well take that.
At the Mount - Portside
The unexpected clash, assembling in the dug-out there was a quick check of the opponents, and yip we were in for a strong match. The Bethlehem boys kept us scoreless in the second half, but it wasn’t without some big shots from Zak who terrorized everything around the goal mouth. Carter kept carrying strong and together with Cory put some real speed and skill into the attack. Brad read the game superbly, adjusting him and our team to the situation as it changed. Particulary important was before the second half started when he started organizing which opponent each player would take. Ryan got past the keeper twice, and had several other close moments. The refs bungled our PC plan but generally kept the game clean and fast - BONES style. We welcomed back Bailey and he took no time getting stuck in. Casey gave a strong performance in the first half getting on the end of ball from Carter that he fed through to Ryan for one of the teams best goals this year. Ashleigh had a blinder on defence and hammered away at everything in Centre Half. Everyone played well, it was brilliant to watch and tons of support from the side. Thanks all for coming, its exciting for sure.
At the Mount - Portside
The clash we had been waiting for. A gritty effort built on a powerful first half. Casey opened the scoring after we built plenty of pressure in their circle. Brad shot is a tomo from deep and Ryan put in two classy goals, one on the end of a brilliant strike by Brad. Ryan also almost saved a ball going dead with a big reach over the goal line. Brad pulled out some great late reach tackles which put us back in possession. The defence pressed hard all night. Luke chased everything in the centre. Carter cut loose a few times, and Finn played 50 mintues of quality and determined hockey.
Bone crusher = BRAD (His 18th big performance for the team)
The reffing was brilliant, we had a super turnout of supporters including Amanda (from last year) who came down to watch and the Kaumatua of the Ohope Hockey Team Steve Everitt also travelled over to watch how the hockey youth of Whakatane are stacking up. Thanks to all, especially those who took transport and particularly Matt & Bailey for their dedication. Can’t wait to get Bailey back on the turf.

WIS･Ƕ Bones 5 - 0 Papamoa Blue
Another rematch of our grading game, a nice second half to watch, and gusty and disciplined first half. The bones kept their wits, crushing home 5 goals including a double from Kavya and Casey. Brad spent the match feeding through-balls to the forwards and binding with Carter to lead the midfield. Big H got up to the left midfield, and ran a good half the field in one big move, and cleaned up everything else that came his way. Harry Young got so stuck in together with Cody and Finn, that Skye barely got any involvement. Great defensive covering, and well done to the defence for not leaking any goals. Well done.
Luke backed up his performance with another busy effort including a great PC injections. Zac also put in some solid play while attacking the left and Kavya got a double and was only a few centremetres of getting a hatrick with a brilliant strike on the fly. Cory and Casey chased everything upfront, both players turning the defenders inside out and setting up in the circle well. Casey sinking two sweet goals - Bonecrusher!
Thanks to the parents helping out, Elaine who gave up her end-of-term evening to get behind the bones, Tony for getting Kent home, Bailey & Matt for their dedication to travel with their team, Ross, Alan, Justin and Dianne for transport and support. Lastly to Gav who had to sacrifice missing the bones due to work committments but came down to the school to see us of.
& to the TEAM, for making the game a good one, so all those who couldn’t be there can feel proud of the effort.

A rematch of our grading game, a nice game to watch and the reward for the boys hard week. They finished on Friday sinking some fast and accurate goals and playing all over the turf with skill and strategy. We had no minivan but plenty of parents were on-board to do the travel and they will be pretty happy to see you all play tonight.
— CONGRATE 6-A-SIDE “GOLD” —
Well done in Rotorua to Ryan, Carter, Brad, Finn and Bailey. Bailey has sustained reasonable battle damage, so we stand by him to recover so he can get back into his hockey and all sport hes into.
— BONECRUSHER =LUKE —
Luke was like a new smartphone with all connections running, fast and snappy. Achieving everything he launched at and draining his battery life into an impressive hockey game. Some of the link play and the defensive work he was able to add to his striker role was brililant. When we named the team, Luke was asked if it was OK to play Centre Forward, he responded with a man of the match performance.
— GAME HIGHLIGHTS —
Kavya and Luke string together 8 or more passes to skin 4 defenders.
Harry and his ability to play upright on his reverse side.
Finns, Carter and Cody strengthening the midfield and setting the forwards alive.
Carters feed from well outside the 23 which Kavya sunk on the fly.
Zac getting his job done, to score goals.
Ryan blasting in goals from thin little angles deep near the baseline.
Carter and Corys right style play.
Brads follow up on PCs to drive in two tomohawks.
The PCs in general - we tried a fake move, and although it didn’t work it looked very polished from the sideline, definately a game highlight!
Skye saving a difficult tomo strike.
Kavya’s PC injections, Casey’s stops, and the rest of the PC team.

A war. Literally. Our players subjected to endless punishment, bashed in ankles, malicious hockey and even some stick chucking. A rubbish attitude conqoured by the bones who patiently waited till the dying minutes when our Captain Brad Rothwell crushed home the game winner.
Brad your leading this team with guts and passion, playing honest, tactical and skilled hockey with all players following your lead.
Kavya and Luke picked up the other brilliant goals with the team giving everything they had on the field to make this win the gutsiest fight yet.
Cody was strong, and when you realize they haven’t attacked in about 15 minutes you can see how he marks players to just shut them out. Harry another big performance, a little growling for slipping off a few players but a similar effort that saw him be yesterdays bonecrusher. To finish off with the defence unit, Ashleigh took an absolute hammering but gave them nothing, with some heavy plays toward the end when the game reached its nerve racking finish.
Brad and Finn took control of the midfield, with Finn getting the structure sorted and blizting them at the end - Finn a super strong match, todays bone crusher.
In the attack it started with zac getting some keen shots that nearly slid through (on attack that is) and Ryan playing his usual skill and speed to create play after play. Casey continues to show his ability to collect very difficult passes while hot on attack, and a mammoth strike which didn’t find the goal but was so sweetly hit. Kavya let one go on the fly which was brilliant, and also opened the scoring potting a quick strike to put us in the lead. Luke drifted a bit on the right wing beforing finding his flair, and shot a superb goal to get the team its second. Corys getting stronger each game, reading the play and setting others alive around him. And Carter, talk about waking up the dragon, your last 5 games have been incredible and two tough matches you dominated when either up front, or running midfield.
A gutsy effort, with the right and deserving team getting the win.
Gav and Kent were pretty proud of that, just maximum intensity on the sideline and wishing we both were young again so we could be out there fighting with you all.
Elaine thought it was a pretty epic game, her mother coming down to watch also pretty blown away by what she saw. Shane thanks for your support and any others who were there to see WISH (boys and girls) make 4 wins toward the exchange and the overall sports trophy returnging West of the Waioweka.

A dominating game, and again a scoreline that doesn’t really reflect the control the bones bought with them.
Harry stoodout but there was an entire team of talent showcasing their skill up and down the turf. Skie made some phenomenal saves and his partner in crime, Zac put his first goal in on attack.
Carter and Brad were impressive, Carters goal crashing into the backboard.
Ryan was there in attack and defence, running the shop like the trooper he is. Bailer clearing from the circle numberous time.
More contribution on defence from our attackers, a well umpired game. Pretty good result and well done tot he players who had a great night being hosted in Gizzy by their billets.

This game was a battle of attrition, down to the bare bones of our team, the eleven bones gave their 50 minutes to bring home the win. A dominance the score maybe doesnt reflect but enough to see Zac close out the first part of the competition without leaking any goals on the Tauranga battlefields.
Brad and Ryan were fighting the lurgy and after the game they were drained, both with gutsy performances. We wish you and all the other sick bones to get well quickly.
Luke opened the scoring sinking a smart goal on the back of an exciting build up.
Carter hammed in a backstick and came nervously close with a backstick uppercut earlier on.
The final goal was superb, smashed in by Callum and giving us a score from a PC. I can’t imagine how good he will be when he starts eating moth plant.
As always, no one had a bad game but some boys will probably be feeling a little frustrated. Some epic plays break out during our games, and a sloppy tap pass, or a dumb swing and miss happens. Well, it happens, we’ll keep training to avoid it, and hopefully as we head into the next phase of the competition more good plays are gonna come.
Great to see our defense switching to a 2-defense pattern and playing strongly. This team is going well having players that can bump around positions and cover as we need. Looking back on the game, we dug deep, got the result we wanted.
Well done to our hockey boys who also nailed the cross-country the same day. 1,2,3 in the year 8’s, and 2nd in the year 7’s. Awesome stuff.
A great first half going up 4-1 and a tight second half waiting until the final whistle when Brad sunk a great strike. Other goal scorers were Ryan x3 and Carter x1.
10 first half shots and scored 4. Great conversion rate!
Shots were hard to deliver, Finn & Casey being the better with quick sweep/slap strikes. Their goalie was pretty amazing, as are our 2! Great to see Skie in some new gear - thanks WIS! Also great to see Zac in the OBO kit and another shut-out - nice! Now we will move our monday Trainings to get these keepers plenty of practice.
When we didn’t look strong, it was becuase our forwards were waiting in the circle - we won’t play that way, we cramp the space for each other, need to build up our attacks. I counted 4 attackers in the circle and ball was in the other half of the field.
We mixed the formation up, and played just two defenders for a while. Ryan you were solid at both ends , defending and attacking.
Ashleigh is this weeks bonecrusher, always going hard and in particular hitting strongly upfield. A goal on the right wing would of been icing on the cake, but its coming.
We are learning how trickly goals are when the defense is good - have to keep going at everything until it crosses that line.
Casey I was impressed with your decisions on attack - while they didn’t work this week you are going to make it happen very soon.
Bailey a big game from you.
Well done to our hockey boys who also nailed the cross-country the same day. 1,2,3 in the year 8’s, and 2nd in the year 7’s. Awesome stuff.

A well supported match, with plenty of supporters getting down to Stadium Horizon to cheer on the up and coming hockey boys and girls.
🏑 Well done to the girls who kept at it for a strong match, very frustrating not to score against the boys with the ref calling a PC just before a great shot was struck.
Another big match from Ryan, all over the goalmouth all match. Casey made some great play at striker. Luke and Kavya made their game goals. Carter, Bailey and Callum worked hard in the midfield and Brad ran shop as he does. Cory your skills are immense. Asthon upped his play when put into centre defence. Ashleigh your speed is lethal and each game your are gaining. Zac finished by giving us all some of that intense breathtaking stuff he is good at giving. Harry the Bonecrusher, reading the game, playing crafty, finding your players and your great ability to hit ball upfield while running after pushing them wide away from danger.
- 34 Circle Penetrations
Attacking game and Callum hitting a sweet goal amongst many others players striking goals. Heaps of linking play, Harry finding Bailey, Corey everywhere, Carter everywhere. Brad stuck some nice goals and tinked the upright twice, love the sound, hate the result. Great goalkeeping from the Rotorua side. A fresh start to the day, thanks for all dropping off the team and making this happen.
- 18 Circle Penetrations
-24 Saves !!
Taupo brang the weather, and a very decent opposition. You could walk into the ground and see they were up for it. While we lost the game, it was a serious step up in quality, exactly what we go searching for. Easily most of the boys best games for the team, particularly Ashton, the twins, and the 14 or more saves between the keepers. No goalscorers, however some deserving efforts, we fought hard against Taupo - used what we had to make a strong battle. Well done to Carter - Bonecrusher today with a big effort as captain in Game 2. He scored a clean goal in game 1, and his work-rate today was immense.
A very attacking game with high scoring. Brad hit in some very powerful shots, and Ryan made several lethal strikes and attempted many others. Kavya scored, and gave it a real go trying to get more. Luke touched in a goal, a good finish. The defense sorted well, strayed at the right time, rushed their space when it mattered. Bailey captained the match and poured plenty of balls into the forwards, and many were taken! Harry got a good run and made a good job owning the right defensive zone.
Aquinas put up some heavy defense with their #10 playing a big game. Huge tackle count.
Friday (Competition Match 1) Games Summary:
1st half Game Stats:
We entered the circle 14 times.
We had 6 PCs - converted -0
We had 13 shots on goal - converted 4.
Thanks Skie for being devoted to tracking the game data.
A good match with a bit to learn. Quite a fast game and we got heaps of substitutions so all boys got a decent run. Cody played a strong defensive game and backed up the 4 grading games with excellent marking and tackling. Carter ran mad and it took a dirty move by the opposition to bash him around the knee to put an end to his night. This sux because dribbling is a great skill, but when you stick is constantly being bashed to bits from bad tackling its very hard to play. Callum you almost nailed a brilliant shot off a PC. Casey and Carter your start-off was brilliant and to link with Cory was awesome. Harry you had a decent match, nice man! Brad tackled anything that moved, and at half time it was the sweat on our midfield that said it all - you all worked very hard. Ashton made a brilliant clearance when they got a PC and fed upfield well. Luke, a nice goal, well done - always ready for it. Ashley you nailed the hockey 1 hockey 2 hockey 3 and looked fast up front. Casey played well and great quick stick work. Ryan a pretty fantastic match - beleiving in winning the battle no matter what - and fast to get his shots away when in the circle.
BONES [4 - 0] Pongakawa
It was the game we came for, a chance to put our training and abilities to the test. An interesting thing happened, Skie was given the job of being the team statician, and with Kent umpiring it was only when he got home he found the game data Skie has recorded, so here it is:
TURNOVERS FOR US: 28
TURNOVERS BY THEM: 25
CIRCLE PENETRATIONS BY US: 24
CIRCLE PENETRATIONS BY THEM: 3
FIELD GOAL SHOTS BY US: 10
FIELD GOAL SHOTS BY THEM: 0
GOALS BY US: 4
GOALS BY THEM: 0
So this tells us in 20 minutes, we got into the circle 24 times and 10 times we got a shot on the goal, and 4 of these went in. This also means we got in the circle more than 1 time every minute.
It started with our first attack being Launched by Carter and Finn thanks to Finn (c) winning the hit-off. Callum made a great jab tackle sequence on thier main attacker and later in the game done a great flick and chase over an opponents stick. Brad pulled off a midfield overhead and had a strong game getting on the score sheet in both games. Finn was pouncing on the ball once it got in the circle, and scored some nice goals tonight becuase of that determination. Kavya put in a very deserved first goal for the team. Carter hassled their centre’s taking the possession and closing them down all match - big game. Generally the whole team played really well.
BONES [4 - 0] Papamoa Blue
Confirmed Goals: Ryan Schwass 2,
Another top match with a different style. We played a good team passing game - setting each other up and setting ourselves up. All players were fantastic, and its a great time to mention our defence. No goals against us tonight! Cody in both games defended the right wing, which is very important becuase up the right the attack can make a lot of runs, and put dangerous centre balls into the circle. Brilliant Cody. Cory you are working well, getting the ball and moving inside out and around players and then feeding inside to our Centre Forwards. Ashleigh made another huge hit during defense to clear the ball. Carter again giving heaps in the midfield. Casey had a really good game, predicts the hockey flow and puts himself into a good positional area all the time. Luke bought some nice play to the left attack and with him back we had the whole squad tonight, and two nice wins. BAILEY = BONECRUSHER.
Saturday Game Summary:
A good workout resulted in a hard-fought loss. We came up against some strong players, some twice the height of our fellas and fast. But we held strong, our defense plugged the holes and both our goalies added some good saves. On attack we had Luke back and he had a solid game and also helped us out on defence and in the midfield. The marking was tight and this kept Brad free to intercept and shut down plays which he done very well. Some good gang-tackling where we got two tacklers on their player and caused them to panic. Brad scored a cracker goal and had some other top strikes. Callum and Casey had strong games. Finn & Carter need to go for the ball any time it is possible, any opportunity - like when you watch super rugby and the halfback passess it to three players, and you think there will be confusion and they will drop the ball, but they don’t, instead they all go for it and the closest player usually takes it with the others ready to support. I remember that one play you both looked at each other, it happens but we can train to prevent it. Good PC defence without any training. Ashton you made some good blocks. Cody you would of enjoyed marking their centre forward, but well done to Ryan who dropped back to centre back and shut down her space. Ryan played a top game - BONECRUSHER TODAY. Thanks to all the parents who came to watch or who dropped their kid off at training this morning.
WELL THAT WAS INCREDIBLE, we set out to send a message in grading, and got there. In a pretty insense way. Won 1 - 0 & Won 2-1. The team didn’t plan to go about it the extreme way, but they did and some of the night highlights are:
1 Zak saving an impossible backstick aerial strike
2 Brad scoring to win the game with a pretty non-controverisal goal the offer team contested. If your inside the circle and you are the attacking team, the ball is alive.
3 Finn and the entire play that lead to his equalizing goal in game2.
4 Cody who played an incredible defensive game in game2.
5 Ryan who smashed the ball out of defense into the sideline.
6 Brad crashing in a backfoot heavy shot to give game two the lead.
Some good things came from the games, we learnt twice how to capture the lead and when to defend a lead and relieve big pressure. That all players worked to a good balance of team strategy and their own individual game style. Some other notes of the night was cory in game 1 making the perfect lead and getting the feed ball to carter. A few good slap shots. Lots of breaks in the centre especially Brad and Carter. Ashliegh mowing down the right wing. And the other opportunities you were all in the right place for but didn’t happen tonight, they soon will.
Big start to the hockey bones with a 5-1 crusher over Whk. High School up and coming team. I was super impressed with what I saw. The game was controlled with defense. Harry led the back three and Ashton and Ashleigh shut down their wings all night. Kudos to you fellas. Games are won with big defense. Zak held post and midway through the second half pulled off an aerial save. Astonishing. In the midfeld Brad got stuck straight in and dominated the halves. Bailey played his position like a boss. His endurance was all over the place, and fed in from the left with ease. Up front we had Ryan cutting recklessly on the right wing. Missed a few chances but created opportunities big time and when Ashleigh took the right wing position there was this little guzty speedster adding some punch. Casey and Callum were asked to hold the front, and in the first half they harrassed the other team, a very good effort. Kavea was hesitatant prematch to feed the penalty corners but come game time he just took up his roll like a natural. We learned a bit tonight, we played well and to start the season like this, great hockey.
Match summary: 5-1. (Brad 3, Giles.C 2).
